A Far Cry From Krycek

The date, September 24, 1995. The place, The Flamingo Hilton in Reno, Nevada. The reason for being there, Nicholas Lea's first ever X-Files Convention. Nick was very nervous about coming to the convention. "I thought people would want to kill me," is what he told me. He creeped out on stage hiding behind a large tray. The audience roared with laughter. Most of them understood this was not Krycek coming out on stage. Nick seemed to relax a bit after the warm receiption he got. Although he still seemed somewhat restless as he brought a chair up on stage and used it for about 5 minutes total. Nick told how he begged (literally) to Chris Carter not to kill off Krycek and in a bit of irony, about how his girlfriend is the actress who played Melissa Scully (who Krycek shot and killed) Melinda McGraw. Nick played to the audience very well and everyone enjoyed his time one stage.

That night, I was invited to go gambling with Mitch and Nick. I talked with Nick a bit that night about how he liked his first convention appearance. He said it was fun and that he hoped it didn't turn into a big think about money and merchandise. He didn't liked the idea of showing up at this cons to get people to come in and buy stuff. He wants to keep it about the show.

Nick has a very sweet and charming personality. He's got a "boyish-ness" about him that keeps him bouncing off the walls. It was great to watch Mitch and Nick interact. They were like a couple of little boys. Unfortunately neither of them went home from Reno with more money that they came with.

At the airport, the day after the con, I mentioned to Nick that he had an estrogen brigade. He was flattered and wanted to know what they said about him. I chuckled, unsure how to respond knowing that many remarks made about him were of a sexual nature. He said "They wanna kill me, don't they?" I laughed, replying "Oh no, killing you is the last thing they'd wanna do to you." Mitch understood what I meant and laughed too saying to Nick, "You stud, you!"

I did my best to ensure to Nick that no one wanted to kill him. I promised to get some info from the NLEB and what they thought of him and to forward it to him, which I will do when I see him in Austin shortly. I did recently see one of his films called "The Raffle". While the concept of the movie itself was not the best, his acting was wonderful. He has also made appearance is television shows such as "Highlander - The Series", "Lonesome Dove", as well as "The X-Files".
